Pretty Lights - Unreleased 2010 Remixes

Well, I don't know where my head's been at for the past few months because I'm definitely late getting on this latest release by Derek Vincent Smith, aka Pretty Lights. I had been aware of the tracks on this album individually, but I had never actually traveled to Pretty Lights' Website to discover this was available for free download just as all his other releases are.

Check out these tracks below for a few of my favorites and jump to the above link to download the entire album for yourself.

"Fly Like an Eagle" is one of my favorite Steve Miller Band songs and the Pretty Lights wobble twist that was added is pretty cool.

Growing up in the 90s, I was a huge Chicago Bulls/Michael Jordan fan and his remix of the Bulls' starting lineup theme from that era really brings me back. He debuted this at his New Years Eve shows in Chicago, so that was a pretty fitting move for him.

Lastly, a new take on an all-time classic with Pink Floyd's "Time." Not much to say here, a pretty standard Pretty Lights remix of a song most people have come to love. The same vocals and guitars are used, with added hip-hop beats and wobble bass. This is more of a glitch style remix than anything, but it's great to hear someone bringing a fresh version of this tune to life.

Fuck Yeah Friday!: Dada Life, Dirtyloud, Diplo, Felix Cartal and SUMMER

It's Friday again and that means some treats for you guys to start your weekends off right. Because of my recent fix on Dada Life, I had to post their remix of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way." I don't like any Lady Gaga songs, but this track thumps and pretty much anything Dada Life touch turns into filthy dirty gold. Here they talk about the plug-in they created called the Sausage Fattener and explains how they get such a thumping sound.

Next is one of my favorite new electro-house producers, Dirtyloud. I first heard of him with his remix of Aren Sans' "Apes from Space" and this song might be even dirtier.

This is followed by Felix Cartal & Keatch who put together a funky bassline in "Lunar"

Lastly we have dubstep producer Dillon Francis collaborating with Diplo on a 2-step/reggaton-esque song called "Que Que" that gives you a little something different to spice up your long weekend with. Happy summer!

Beardyman is Sick!

The director of my office, of all people, asked me if I knew Beardyman after he saw him perform on Conan. I had heard the name, but I definitely didn't know anything more than that. I have a real soft spot for awesome beatboxing so when my director explained that's what Beardyman does, I immediately jumped to Conan's website. Well, I was impressed. Beardyman will be at Electric Zoo and I will be there to see him.

What the #1 DJ in The World, Armin Van Buuren, Taught Me Last Night

Armin Van Buuren Live @ Royale Boston, May 25 2011
Well, he's been voted #1 in the world three years in a row, and for good reason. He played a massive 2.5-hour set last night in Boston, sticking to his trance ways but throwing some great tunes in the mix. Every song was great and kept the crowd moving, but here are a few of the tracks that stood out to me last night.

FYI, the third song is basically a club banger version of the classic song you all know and will definitely recognize. They play it at the TD Garden every time the Bruins score - very fitting for a Boston show.

Above & Beyond ft. Richard Bedford - Sun & Moon (Original Club Mix)

Ferry Corsten - P.U.N.K. (Arty Rock-N-Rolla Mix)

Tonight: Armin Van Buuren Does Boston

AVB Live on the Main Stage @ Electric Zoo 2010

The legendary Armin Van Buuren is making a stop tonight at Club Royale in Boston and I never thought I'd be this excited to see him. Not being a huge fan of his original productions, or trance in general for that matter, my excitement is built on the fact that he is simply an awesome DJ. Armin hails from the Netherlands and has been voted the number one DJ in the world THREE YEARS IN A ROW by the readers of DJ Mag. With notoriety like that, it's easy to get hyped up and know that he will bring an awesome show to Boston tonight. Royale is a relatively small venue but has brought acts like Tiesto, Above & Beyond, Rusko, Steve Aoki, and David Guetta to its doors over the past few months.

Here are a couple tracks to wet your whistle this warm [finally] sunny Hump Day. Also included is his live set from the Roseland Ballroom in NYC, May 20 2011.

Deadmau5 - Raise Your Weapon (Madeon Remix)

Porter Robinson's Facebook Page  mentioned this hot and spicy remix of Deadmau5's first attempt at dubstep. The original is beautiful and always sends chills down my spine, but Madeon's remix is funky as hell and really shows a dynamic between the original and the remix.

By the way, no big deal or anything, but Madeon is SIXTEEN YEARS OLD. I didn't even know what electronic dance music was at age 16; I was stuck in the depths of bands like the Dave Matthews Band and Dispatch...gross.

Deadmau5 - Raise Your Weapon (Madeon remix)

Deadmau5 - Raise Your Weapon (original mix)

BONUS: This is a DOPE mashup of Wolfgang's amazing tunes of "Illmerica", "Undertaker", and "Wolfgang's 5th Symphony". If you didn't know this was a mashup, you might think it was one of Wolfgang's original tunes. Unreal.

Happy Hump Day: Fehrplay - Meow (Meow Again)

I was scrolling through my massive iTunes library the other night, in attempts to organize my music and add to my previously-cleared iPod (thanks for nothing Tommy Stirling). As I was scrolling, I noticed I had a tune called Meow (Meow Again). I'll admit that I sometimes get in the habit of downloading entire albums without actually listening to all of the tracks. So I clicked play and I thought to myself, wow what have I been missing? Couple this with Mike Mastrangelo's recent obsession with kittens and I knew I had something special on my hands.

Hopefully this track will get you out of your gloomy mood thanks to a week of awful weather in the northeast. And hey, it's only 2 days until another Fuck Yeah Friday!

Below is the "Meow Again" stream and download, followed by the original "Meow" mix, followed by the Cruzaders remix.

Monday Throwback: Digable Planets - Dog It

I'm way too groggy this Monday morning to write an extensive blog entry. It's a rainy day here in Boston which is only adding to my grogginess, and this gem from 1994 was the perfect fit for my current state of mind. Digable Planets is another 90s hip hop group that I have heard over the years but never invested much time into. Like a Tribe Called Quest, they fused hip hop and jazz (one of my favorite combos), and have tight lyrical flow. My personal favorite part of this group is MC Mary Ann "Ladybug Mecca" Vieira, who adds a unique female element to the dynamic.

Fuck Yeah Friday (the 13th)!: DallasK, Michael Woods, and Wolfgang Gartner

Mmmm... isn't that Hasslehoff dreamy? Get excited because this week I have a handful of treats for you to get the weekend started right.

First off, I bring you a couple tracks by a recent discovery by the name of DallasK. According to his Soundcloud, "I make dance music." That's right, DallasK makes dance music. I think that's all you need to know, let the following two tracks speak for themselves:

Nero- Guilt (DallasK Remix) by DallasK
(Click the "Download" button to download)

Hyphy (Original Mix) OUT ON BEATPORT MAY 23rd! by DallasK
(unable to provide a download link at this time; track is currently unreleased and only available on his Soundcloud)

Next up, we have a great Michael Woods remix of the song "Oyster" by Moguai. This song is featured on Avicii's Strictly Miami 2011 compilation released a couple weeks ago. I have been listening to the compilation non-stop and this is one of the tracks that has become a favorite:

Moguai - Oyster (Michael Woods Remix) by Phazing blogg

Download Oyster (Michael Woods remix) Here

Lastly, this is a song I've had in my collection for a while but never posted on the blog. It's a favorite of mine and isn't necessarily a banger, but it gets the job done especially if you like progressive house (which I do). Wolfgang Gartner remixes Tiesto & Sneaky Sound System's "I Will Be Here" (that girl is gorgeous huh?):

Happy Hump Day: Foreign Beggars Ft. Skrillex - Still Gettin It (Preview)

According to the Foreign Beggars' Website, they "...are a critically acclaimed Rap, Grime and Dubstep group based in London, UK." I am vaguely familiar with their work, mostly thanks to their collaboration with Skrillex on the song "Scattah" (listen below).

On Monday, Skrillex posted an update via his Facebook Page that read like this: "PLEASE support my boys @theforeignbeggars and preorder their new EP. Ive got the whole ting already and it's so epic so do it!"

I will definitely check out this EP when it comes out, but for now I am only left with this preview clip:

Monday Throwback: De La Soul - Breakadawn

These guys epitomized early-to-mid-90s hip hop. And this song, "Breakadawn," epitomized De La Soul's chill, laid-back hip hop style with melodic loops and super-smooth lyrical flow. This track comes from their third studio CD called Buhloone Mindstate and was released as its first single.
Here's an interesting fact about the album title from Wikipedia (pronounced Balloon Mindstate):

"The title refers to the group's efforts to remain grounded after acquiring a name. On the album's intro, the group repeat the phrase, "it might blow up but it won't go pop", then, to end the track, they repeat the line a final time with a balloon popping replacing the word pop. They do the same at the end of "Patti Dooke". These are references to the group's refusal to change their style of music for anyone else, even if it were to become popular."

Sorry for the low quality stream.

Fuck Yeah Friday!: Michael Woods - First Aid

Talk about a banger. This is the perfect way to start your weekend.

Michael Woods is one of those producers that I have an immense amount of respect for and almost every track I hear of his makes my jaw drop, yet I don't actually own much of his music. I think he first popped on my radar when Deadmau5's newest CD 4x4=12 came out. On this CD is a track called "I Said (Michael Woods remix)" and has a really nice, driving bassline. That's the type of bassline I associate Michael Woods with (see below for what I'm talking about). Ever since then I have been seeking out Michael Woods tracks and I am hoping to catch his DJ set some day. Woods is on Deadmau5's label, Mau5trap Records, and hails from England. This tune is a few months old but I will never get tired of it.

As always, turn up the volume, turn up the bass, and have yourself a stupid weekend.

The above track, "I Said", is what I'm talking about with this driving bassline. Martin Solveig dropped this at Ultra 2011 and needless to say the place went nuts (think: 50,000 watts of sound). Download "I Said" Here

It's a Womp Womp Wednesday: Slumdogz - In The Hood

I was informed by my good red-headed friend Jake Collier that Flux Pavilion and Doctor P were releasing a Circus Records showcase album. I am a HUGE fan of Flux Pavilion; I don't think he has put out one track I have disliked. His newest single, Bass Cannon, is a massive track and was played during many sets at Ultra, as well as the Boston Rusko show last week. One track on this compilation was "In the Hood" by Slumdogz. Definitely a hard dubstep song that should rub you the right way.

Happy birthday to the biggest loser I know, Mike Mastrangelo. Check out his Soundcloud

I had previous posted a download link, but I was alerted for copyright infringement and can no longer provide that link. Support the artists and buy the album at the above link (Amazon, or otherwise).

Monday Throwback: Beastie Boys - Paul Revere

Tomorrow, the Beastie Boys' newest release called The Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 comes out and I couldn't be more excited for it. This week, I figured I'd put a real throwback on, stemming from the year 1987. Licensed to Ill was one of the first CDs I owned and to this day I can recite almost all of the lyrics from the song "Paul Revere." The Beastie Boys were kind enough to put up a streaming version of the new album because it has apparently leaked. Also, last night they did an interview with Rock 101.9 in New York City. You can watch it Here. Check out songs from their new album after the jump!

A-Trak at Royale Boston tonight!
